Who is a good candidate for this surgery?

Women as well as men will benefit from this treatment if they have genetic based hair loss, and both sexes are also suitable for treatment along the same lines like tattoo removal, and laser hair removal if it is excess hair you are concerned about, rather than lack of. However, the success of this procedure depends upon the amount of ‘donor hair’ you have. The less hair you have the more difficult it is to transplant donor hair into the bald areas of the scalp.

Your first step is to visit your GP or hair specialist as they will be able to discuss this treatment with you and whether they think you are suitable or not. There is no link between the treatment and infertility according to research. The GP will talk about the risks as well as the benefits and will also ask you about your medical history.

He/she will examine your hair and may take a ‘before’ photograph to use as a comparison tool for a later date.

What he or she will look at is the colour and texture of your hair, and the colour contrast between your scalp and hair. This is mainly done for aesthetic reasons as he/she will be looking to get a perfect match between the two. However, it can be the decider between having surgery or not. If there is likely to be a poor match between the colour of your grafted hair and your scalp (which means that it will be more obvious) then you may think again about having this procedure.

If you are prone to heavy scarring such as keloids (angry red scars) or poor wound healing then hair transplant surgery may not be a good option.
